Digital New York Times Academic Pass Toolkit

This guide was created as a  resource for all CUNY libraries to help support the promotion of the New York Times digital subscriptions available to any members of the CUNY community with a current cuny.edu email.  It includes promotional materials created at individual CUNY campuses and by the New York Times, all of which can be be customized for use at any CUNY campus.

Message to all CUNY librarians. Starting in late March and throughout the year, people who signed up for a CUNY Academic Pass will be reaching their one-year anniversary. On that date, for each individual, the article counter will begin.  After accessing 10 articles they will be prompted to subscribe or log-in. CUNY patrons should go to nytimes.com/passes and sign in as an existing subscriber. Please let all of your colleagues and patrons know and be prepared to get queries about this!! Judith Schwartz from Medgar Evers created a great two-sided postcard to spread the word. Click here if you'd like to download the file and add your own Library's logo!

New York Times Academic Pass

The New York Times Digital is now available to all CUNY students, faculty and staff! The CUNY account now entitles all people with a cuny.edu email domain to acquire a subscription to the digital NYTimes. Once an account is created access is available from anywhere with a NYTimes login.

Anyone who initiates an account will have an active subscription for one year from the date he/she creates the account. If a patron already has an annual subscription to the NYTimes he/she can cancel it and will receive a refund. However, if the patron only has a monthly subscription, the New York Times will not issue a refund for that month.

The academic digital subscription works as a regular digital NYTimes subscription with two exceptions: 1) the academic subscription does not include an app for a tablet. Apps are available for smart phones but tablet users should access the NYTimes at mobile/nytimes.com, and 2) the academic subscription limits the number of archives articles from 1923 to 1980 that can be downloaded.
