Accessibility Information on Redundant Link Text

General Information:

  • Redundant links are 2 links on the same page, which go to the same place and are adjacent to each.

    • Or the same link at the top and bottom of the  page, but with no other links between them.

  • Not all redundant links are a problem.

  • Each link needs to be checked to make sure it adds value.

Why is avoiding redundant links important?

  • For screen reader users redundant links are an issue because:
    • They are each read aloud, repeating the same links over and over.
    • The "link list" for the page will be cluttered with the same links listed multiple times.
  • For keyboard users, redundant links are an issue because:
    • They add more keyboard stops.
    • Users have to tab through each link on a page

How to fix redundant links?

  • See if one of the links can be removed or combined.
    • That way, each link is adding value without adding more cognitive load.
